Android 16 may let Gemini perform in-app actions like ordering food

Android 16 might make Google’s Gemini an even more integral part of smartphone use. According to Android Authority, a new API will let Gemini perform actions inside applications.

When Google released Android 16 DP1 earlier in the week, AA spotted new APIs in the developer documents that offered a feature called “app functions.” The document goes on to say that an app function “is a specific piece of functionality that an app offers to the system.” These functionalities can be “integrated into various system features.”

The description is pretty vague, but there is an example: “for example, a function to order food could be identified as ‘orderFood.’ This could mean that my Mary Brown’s app could have a function to ‘order food,’ just by saying, “Hey, Google, open Mary Brown’s app and order food.”

This could majorly change how people use Gemini once Android 16 launches. Google is working on the Jarvis AI, which will essentially let AI purchase products and even book a flight. This seems like the natural next step before the eventual launch of Jarvis.
