Virgin, Koodo, Fido roll out $39/60GB 4G plans

Black Friday 2024 . Carriers . Deals . fido . koodo . News . Virgin Plus Article

The Big Three flanker brands, Virgin Plus, Koodo and Fido, have launched $39/60GB 4G plans, slightly dropping the prices from the $44 they were before. Notably, this is a welcome step towards better offers since, so far, few providers seem willing to match (let alone beat) last year’s $34/50GB plan.

However, the change also brings small tweaks to the plans themselves. For example, Virgin stripped the Canada/U.S. calling from its plan when it reduced the price.

Virgin’s plan now includes unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting, international texting sent from Canada and other features like call display and voicemail. The 4G data is speed capped at up to 150Mbps. The plan costs $39/mo with no autopay pricing shenanigans like other providers. The $39 price is for bring-your-own-phone (BYOP) customers, with the plan jumping up to $49/mo (after a $5/mo credit) for those who want to get a phone.

Koodo similarly killed its $44/50GB ($39 with autopay) plan and replaced it with a $44/60GB ($39 with autopay) plan for BYOP, though so far, it has kept its $54/60GB ($49 with autopay) plan for BYOP customers. Koodo’s plan includes unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting, an option to select one free perk like unlimited international texting or rollover data, and other features like call display and voicemail. Koodo caps 4G speeds at up to 100Mbps.

Finally, Fido joined the other three in offering a $39/60GB plan, though you can’t currently get the offer online. The Fido plan page lists a $54/60GB Canada/U.S. calling plan (after $10 autopay credit) and a $44/80GB (after $10 autopay credit) plan with unlimited calling to seven countries. Weirdly, these are the same plans it had when it started Black Friday deals last week, except the 60GB option now costs $10/mo more and the 80GB plan is now $5/mo cheaper.

To get the $39/60GB (after $10 autopay credit) plan, you currently need to navigate to Fido’s homepage and either call the number displayed there or find a store near you to get it. The plan is limited to new activations only, and forcing people to call in or go in-store puts them at risk of getting charged a $70 connection fee (this is usually waived for online orders).

Since the plan isn’t listed online, it’s not clear what it includes, though presumably, it has unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting and other Fido benefits like call display and voicemail. Further, Fido caps 4G plans at speeds of up to 150Mbps.
